Our clay soil moves. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and frost pushes on anything sitting in it. Deck supports have to go below frost or sit on footings designed for that movement, or the deck ends up with a slope and a gap at the house within a few years. We frame with treated lumber, use hardware rated for it, and leave the right gaps so the boards can move without cupping.
